brain Dr. Leonard F. Koziol is a clinical neuropsychologist with specialty board certifications in Neuropsychology and Pediatric Neuropsychology. He works with children, adolescents and adults with attention or concentration problems, memory difficulties, executive dysfunction, and learning disabilities.

He also provides consultations and clinical supervision for other practitioners. He offers post-doctoral education and training for neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists, physicians in related disciplines, and occupational, speech/language, and physical therapists who wish to update their knowledge base.

Dr. Koziol has also served as a forensic psychologist expert in legal proceedings, and is available for case consultation and expert testimony. For more on what Dr. Koziol does, please review his Curriculum Vitae.

Professional Activities

Subcortical Structures and Cognition BookDr. Koziol has an internationally recognized reputation. His 2009 book, co-authored with Dr. Deborah Budding, has received world-wide acceptance. This best seller in neuropsychology and neuroscience was recently released in a paperback edition and translated into Japanese. Visit the publisher's website for more information.

ADHD as a Model of Brain-Behavior RelationshipsHis most recent book was released in 2014. Visit the publisher's website for more information. This book calls into question basic assumptions, prominent theories, commonly used test methods, and even the phrase "executive functioning." It takes an evolutionary/neuroscience look at cognitive organization, including memory, planning, decision-making and adaptation to novel circumstances.Gaps are identified between systems of cognitive control and those behaviors that are evaluated in neuropsychological testing.

ADHD as a Model of Brain-Behavior RelationshipsHis second book, co-authored with Drs. Budding and Chidekel, was released in 2013. Visit the publisher's website for more information. This book challenges the current view of ADHD as a behaviorally defined diagnosis and identifies the profound disconnect between current neuropsychological testing and the way the brain actually works.

Dr. Koziol has authored numerous book chapters and peer reviewed journal publications (see his CV for a complete list of publications). He edited several special edition journals on the topics of ADHD, Executive Functioning, and the role of the cerebellum in movement and cognition. He has achieved the highly unusual and respected "three-peat" accomplishment of publishing three specialty topic papers within the same specialty journal within a 12-month period of time.

His first paper covered the topic of the neuroanatomy of expertise and giftedness; his second paper proposed the first comprehensive neuroanatomy of sensory integration and sensory processing disorders; his third paper explains the neuroanatomic relationship between movement and thought. These papers address important issues and topics not only in pediatric neuropsychological development, but also with respect to understanding brain-behavior relationships across the lifespan (check Publications on the right to download these papers).

At this time, Dr. Koziol is primarily publishing by special invitation from editors. Current accepted topics include a journal series on the development of brain networks and brain systems in children, and how these systems affect attention, learning, and executive functioning; and book chapters about the role of the cerebellum in language disorders, and the neuroanatomy of ADHD.

computer keyboardHis publications bridge the gaps between clinical neuropsychology and current neuro-scientific findings. In addition to his groundbreaking 2009 book Subcortical Structures and Cognition, he has written several e-books (also available in paper copies). Topics include ADHD as a model of brain-behavior relationships and an updated model of the neuroanatomy of executive functioning. He is on the editorial review boards of child and adult neuropsychology journals and participates as an invited reviewer for varied neuroscience research journals, including Neuroimage, Developmental Neuropsychology, Brain Mapping, The Cerebellum, and Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London - Series B: Biological Sciences. He is one of the most prolific writers and reviewers in clinical private practice throughout the country. His clinical practice incorporates the most recent neuroscientific findings concerning the development and organization of large-scale brain systems. Beyond his work as a clinical neuropsychologist, author and educator, he is widely recognized for his expertise as a pediatric and adult neurocognitive/neurobehavioral consultant.
